VR (Virtual Reality) Videos

Updated over a week ago

Our VR player is currently in beta testing. We expect to have it released soon.

Recommended encoding settings

We recommend the following settings to ensure your videos can be played on the widest number of devices in the best quality.

Container type

MP4 is the recommended file container as it has the widest player compatibility at the present time.

Resolutions, bitrates, codecs and frame rates

Bitrates
Bitrates should be set high enough to preserve detail but optimized to avoid excessively large files—higher resolutions typically require higher bitrates for clean playback.

Codecs
We are currently recommending H.265/HEVC. Our platform makes it easy to add/replace videos at any time. So when new codecs reach a certain level of adoption (compatible browsers and VR headsets), you can easily swap out older versions. Manufacturers are starting to ship chips with built in AV1 decoders, for example, so in the next year or so, we will be recommending these codecs.

Frame rates
Frame rates should match the source material, which is commonly 60fps or higher for VR.

Example files

Your export files should be (approximately) similar to this:

  • 8k UHD (8192 x 4096) - 90-100 Mbps - H.265 MP4

  • 8k HD (7680 x 3840) - 80-90 Mbps - H.265 MP4

  • 6K (5760 × 2880) - 42 Mbps - H.265 MP4

  • 4K (3840 x 1920) - 28 Mbps - H.265 MP4

  • 2K (2880 x 1440) - 15 Mbps - H.264/5 MP4

  • 1K (1920 x 960) - 4.5 Mbps - H.264/5 MP4

FAQs

  • Q: Can I only upload a single resolution?
A: Yes, you may upload only a single resolution. What you choose to upload is up to you. But the more resolutions, the more devices will be able to view your content.

  • Q: Will other resolutions be created automatically?
A: No, you are responsible for uploading all export files.

Costs

The following costs will be deducted from your payouts in the form of a negative adjustment, for the previous month's activity.

Player cost

You'll be billed 0.02 USD (2 cents) per VR video stream, capped at a total of 0.25 USD per member. A video is considered "streamed" or "watched" if over 20 consecutive seconds have been watched.

Examples:

  • If you have only one member who streams 100 different videos, OR, streams the same video 100 times, you will be charged 0.25 USD (25 cents) in total.

  • If 10 members stream one video each, you will be charged 0.20 USD (20 cents).

Storage and distribution

You will be charged 0.005 USD for storage and 0.003 USD per GB streamed.

How does the streaming work

Our intuitive web player offers the most straightforward way to stream videos using a web browser, mimicking the process utilized by most online streaming platforms. It doesn't require additional installations and is user-friendly.

Desktop, tablet, phone

With a desktop computer, tablet, or phone, scenes can be viewed in 2D mode. Simply click the central play button to initiate. On a mobile device, the "magic window" option enables you to manipulate the device itself to explore the scene.

VR headset

  1. Connect your device to your computer.

  2. You can maneuver the scene on your computer by using the mouse to drag the field of view.

  3. If you're already inside a VR environment utilizing a browser, the play button will take over the entire display and the video will commence in 3D.

  4. The player is designed to automatically detect the best quality that your device can support for an optimal viewing experience.
