Why did I receive a 404 error notification?
If a visitor to your website attempts to access a page that is not available, an error page will be shown, and you will receive an email notification.
Why does this happen?
This most often happens when creators have migrated to us from a different platform, and members are still using old links that they have bookmarked, or if they are clicking old links on other sites that are linking to your current site.
Should I be worried?
Not at all. 404 errors are not a big deal, but it's a good idea to fix the links. This will provide a better experience for your users, and will help with your SEO (Search Engine Optimization).
What should I do?
When you receive a 404 error notification, take the opportunity to update the link on the referring site. If you no longer have access to the referring site, you can create a URL redirect to a specific page on your current site, or to the homepage.
βLearn more about URL redirects
"Incoming" is where you put the wrong/broken URL and "redirect to" is whichever website page URL you want them to go to, or your website homepage. Adding a description can help you organize and keep track of which wrong/broken URLs are being redirected.
How do I remove old links from Google?
When you set up URL redirects, search engines will eventually re-crawl your site and fix the issue automatically. You can update old links right away, however, using Google Search Console (custom domains only).
What does the 404 notification email look like?
Here's a sample of an email notification. It includes the page that the visitor landed on, and the site that the visitor came from.
